India, a different perspective

India has 500 million mobile subscribers for a population of 1.17 billion. With monthly subscriber additions of 12 million it has been growing at 55% over the last two years. Despite this phenomenal rate of increase, the Indian mobile industry offers potential for further growth. Future growth arises from a favourable demographic profile, the existence of populated areas which are yet to be covered and lower regulatory and ownership costs. The government has targeted an increase to 700 million subscribers by 2012. Wireless broadband connectivity is another key area for development.
