Mobile Packet Data Benchmarks

Following many false dawns, in 2007 the factors required to deliver the long awaited inflection point in wireless data growth have finally coalesced in many markets. Gross downlink data rates of wireless technologies can now deliver a user experience that customers value and are prepared to pay for. For customers to make use of this technology, pricing in terms of cost per Mbyte has come down to a level where it does not inhibit usage. Higher data speeds and capacity on 3G networks have led to the growth of a new market segment: mobile broadband connectivity for PCs.

Many operators in European markets with stable or declining voice revenue now rely exclusively on data to deliver top-line growth. In many mature markets 3G mobile broadband is the only ARPU growth factor, with voice and SMS having reached maturity. In the US, the cross-over point where data contributes more to revenue growth than voice has now been reached.

This paper provides selected benchmarks from around the world charting the growth of mobile broadband against the background of the proliferation of HSPA mobile networks in Europe, the USA and Asia.
